Denmark ratified the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety on 27 August
2002.
The Protocol seeks to contribute to ensuring an adequate level
of protection in the field of the safe transfer, handling and use
of living modified organisms (LMOs), that is organisms resulting
from modern biotechnology. In principle such LMOs correspond to
living, genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
By ratifying the Protocol, Denmark has, among other things,
committed itself to ensuring exchange of information about
genetically modified organisms as well as the regulation thereof
through a Danish Biosafety Clearing House.
